What Is Sound Healing? My Journey with Gongs, Singing Bowls & Sacred Sound

Some experiences can't be explained, analysed or thought through. They have to be felt.
For me, sound is one of those experiences.
As a sound practitioner, or as I like to say a Sound Alchemist, I've had the privilege of witnessing hundreds of people arrive carrying the weight of everyday life—busy minds, overwhelmed nervous systems, tired bodies—and then, over the course of a sound journey, gently soften into stillness.
It's one of the reasons I fell in love with this work.
Not because I believe sound "fixes" us, but because I believe it creates something many of us are desperately missing.
Space.
Space to breathe.
Space to feel.
Space to simply be.
Space is medicine.
My Relationship with Sound
Long before I started sound healing, I was fascinated by vibration.
There is something ancient about it.
Across every culture, throughout history, humans have gathered around rhythm, voice and music. We have drummed together, chanted together, sung together and used sound to celebrate, grieve, pray and mark life's great transitions.
Sound has always brought us back to ourselves.
When I discovered the gong, it felt less like learning an instrument and more like remembering something that had always been there. Striking a gong was like opening a portal, it was magical and feels psychedelic to me everytime.
Every time I play, it feels different.
Every gathering has its own energy.
No two journeys are ever the same. I alsways say, the gongs play me.
What Is Sound Healing?
People often ask me what sound healing actually is.
The simplest answer is this:
It is the intentional use of sound to create an environment where the body and mind can deeply relax.
Using high vibrational instruments such as gongs, singing bowls, drums, chimes, flutes and other natural instruments, layers of vibration fill the space, inviting you to stop doing and simply receive.
You don't have to meditate perfectly.
You don't have to quieten your mind.
You don't have to "get it right."
You simply lie down, get comfortable and allow the sounds to wash over you, through you, into you.
The experience becomes less about listening with your ears and more about experiencing vibration with your whole body. Sound healing is natural and powerful way to harmonise the systems inside the body as well as the energetic body and the chakra energy centres.
Why I Believe Sound Is So Powerful
Modern life constantly pulls our attention outwards.
Phones.
Emails.
Responsibilities.
Noise.
Pressure.
We spend so much time responding to the world that we rarely stop to notice what's happening within ourselves.
When we enter a sound journey, something shifts.
The sounds gently invite our awareness back into the present moment.
I often see people leave looking lighter—not because their lives have changed in an hour, but because for a little while they were able to stop carrying everything. Sometimes that's enough to create a completely different perspective.
Every Instrument Has Its Own Voice
One of the things I love most about sound is that every instrument brings its own personality.
The Gong
The gong is the heart of my practice.
People often imagine it to be loud or overwhelming, but in the right hands it can be incredibly gentle, expansive and deeply nurturing. they are somewhat confrontational too and you always receive what you need with the gong!
Its vibrations ripple through the whole body, creating a soundscape that feels almost impossible to describe. The gong doesn't play a melody. It creates an inner experience. Gongs activate both hemispheres of the brain at the same time, so are deeply helpful to those with bisy brains and are meditation aids.
Singing Bowls
Singing bowls bring clarity and softness.
Their pure, sustained tones feel almost like gentle ripples moving across still water.
I often use them to create moments of quiet reflection or to invite people into a deeper state of relaxation. In my private practice I use singing bowls to tune into my guest's etheric and energetic field, they tell me where more energy is needed, or if theres too much energy and needs balancing, they are incredible tools of attunement.
Drums
The drum reminds us of something instinctive. The heartbeat. The first sound we ever heard was our mother's heartbeat, so drums are instinctively connected to an inner home.
Its rhythm connects us to the heartbeat, to the earth beneath our feet and to the ancient traditions of gathering in community.
Sometimes the drum awakens primal energy.
Sometimes it grounds us.
Sometimes it simply reminds us we're alive. I use my drum, that I birthed, as a meditation aid and a counter in breathwork. There is something special about the drum taking us down into the void.
Spirit Flutes & Natural Instruments
One of my favourite sounds is the Spirit-style flute.
Its haunting, breath-like melodies always remind me of walking through forests or standing on a mountain-side.
It feels deeply connected to nature, and that's something I love weaving into my sessions. Its very eveocative I find, and if my guests are needing an emotional relese, the flute will generally encourage this.
Alongside wooden percussion, seed shakers and chimes, these instruments help create a soundscape that feels organic, spacious and alive.
What Happens During a Sound Bath?
Despite the name, there's no water involved. You are the bath! The body of water.
A sound bath is simply an opportunity to rest while being immersed in live sound.
You arrive.
Get comfortable.
Close your eyes if you wish.
Take a breath.
And allow yourself to receive.
Some people drift into a dreamlike state.
Some remain quietly aware throughout.
Some have a very physical expereince, with old pains or tensions working their way out.
Some experience vivid imagery or emotions.
Others simply enjoy one of the deepest relaxations they've had in a long time.
Some people sleep deeply.
Every experience is unique.
There is no right or wrong way to experience sound.
Nature Has Always Been My Greatest Teacher
Much of my work is inspired by the natural world.
When I lead sound journeys, I often think about the sounds that have soothed humanity for thousands of years.
The rhythm of waves.
Birdsong at dawn.
Wind through the trees.
Rain on leaves.
A crackling fire.
Nature has always spoken through vibration.
Perhaps that's one of the reasons sound feels so familiar to us.
It reminds us of something we've always known. I ofetn bring these symbols into my guided meditations as images and imaginative spaces, to guide you into a deep releasing and pleasurable experience with sound.
Why I Continue to Share This Work
Whether I'm holding a gong gathering in Kent, facilitating a retreat abroad or playing beneath the stars at a festival, my intention is always the same.
To create a space where people can put life down for a while.
A space where they don't have to perform, fix themselves or strive to become someone else.
Just a space to breathe.
To listen.
To reconnect.
Everything I share comes from my own journey with sound and the countless moments I've witnessed people reconnecting with themselves through vibration, stillness and presence.
I don't believe sound healing is about escaping life.
I believe it's about helping us come home to a remembering thats inside of us all.
You're Invited
If you've never experienced a sound bath before, I'd love to welcome you.
I facilitate regular sound journeys across Kent, as well as immersive retreats and holistic holidays where sound, nature and mindful practices come together to create space for rest, reflection and reconnection.
Whether it's your first experience or your fiftieth, you don't need to know anything about meditation or spirituality.
Just bring yourself.
The sound will do the rest.
